What’s the best way to cut expensive downtime and maintenance for repairs on machine comms cables? Get rid of the cables: go wireless, with help and advice from SMC.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: Our customer used hundreds of metres of cabling to control COBOTs on a 40 metre production line, which created complex looms. These were time-consuming to build, added weight to the robot armature and created additional costs for maintenance and unplanned downtime due to cable failures through wear and tear.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: By adopting SMC wireless systems our customer has eliminated the cable looms – cutting costs and improving build time. We also converted all other manifolds on the line to wireless, further improving the benefits.

Automatic Feature Recognition & Machining
Pocket Recognition:
SolidCAM automatically recognises all 2D pockets. Instead of machining each individual pocket in a separate operation, all pockets, no matter whether they are open, closed, blind or through pockets, are being identified with their corresponding depth and Z-level and machined in one operation. Full fixture protection in pocket, pocket recognition and 2D drilling allows you to machine your parts while protecting your fixtures.

Chamfering and Deburring:
SolidCAM automatically recognizes all sharp edges where a chamfer can be applied. The user only sets the depth of the chamfer, the cutting diameter of the tool and a safety offset. Advanced Drill Recognition:

Edge Breaking
After machining a CAM part, a burr can sometimes be found that have straight edges or non-tangent outer surface topologies. This occurs when the tool chips the metal off the edge and it can ruin the functionality of the part, or endanger the user because it is razor sharp – removing it is the best option.
SolidCAM's Edge Breaking operation creates a deburring tool path on the outer edges of a part geometry. The position of the tool relative to the edge is always the bi-vector between the two surfaces of that edge.
- Enables creation of a fully automatic tool path by just selecting the part geometry
- Additional features include Automatic Feature Detection, Linking, Lead-In and Collision avoidance
- Ball mill cutters and quality geometry input (mesh) are required for the detection feature to work properly.

Simulator Mode:
SolidCAM for Operators Simulator has no CAM part editing capabilities at all. It enables the CNC Operator to see the Tool table list with full details, to understand the clamping, the work offsets, and to see the simulation of the CAM Part, before running the G-Code on the CNC machine.

Starrag S1250 HD – Hydrostatic bearings bring about a leap in performance in titanium machining
The S1250 HD is predestined for simultaneous 5-axis heavy machining of titanium and Inconel parts due to its excellent static and dynamic properties.
The user derives the greatest advantages from the use of hydrostatic guides in roughing operations. Due to the significantly higher rigidity and damping compared to roller guides, the cutting depths can be increased threefold. The roughing times are reduced accordingly.
The new S1250 HD also benefits from the hydrostatic bearing during finishing. The increased rigidity reduces pitching of the column, which limits jerking and acceleration. QuadroVac is an innovative vacuum clamping system designed especially for workpieces with strong contours and to be machined in many axes.
Typical applications are in the primarily mechanical processing on small to medium-sized workpieces made of different materials, as well as those with gradations, pockets or openings.
With the systems flexibility and ease of configuration, the vacuum clamping system is suitable both for series processing and for holding frequently changing part shapes.
Witte slot vacuum chucks – Slotted Vacuum plates
This vacuum clamping system works with a rubber adaptor mat allows holes, pockets and opening to be drilled without loss of vacuum. Multiple components can be machined once the rubber adaptor mat has been prepared.
The advantages of Witte’s slotted vacuum plates are their low overall height and in combination with the rubber mat, their suitability for use in high-speed cutting for milling small contours, openings and breakouts.

Witte grid vacuum chucks – Grid Plates
Grid plates are suitable for batches of rectangular or square parts which have no through holes, especially where a high degree of parallelism is required. The work piece is clamped to the fixture by the vacuum created within the sealed grid pattern area; this fixture will accept heavier machining then most other types of vacuum fixtures. Standard and special size grids are available.
Samchully Chucks & Hydraulic Cylinders
Samchully Machinery Co. Ltd manufactures power chucks, hydraulic cylinders and scroll chucks in its ISO 9001-accedited factory located in Incheon, Korea. These are fitted to machine tools manufactured by Doosan (Daewoo), Hyundai-WIA (Kia), Haas Automation, DMG Mori and Biglia worldwide.
Samchully standard hydraulic chucks are available as closed centre, standard bore, large bore and mega bore options, with all models available in two, three or four-jaw configurations. Also available are large diameter (up to 2m) hydraulic chucks that are ideal for aerospace and heavy industry applications, with chucks of 1.6 m and larger diameter designed to be used as a three-jaw hydraulic chuck or a four-jaw independent chuck.
HWR Inoflex®
This chuck design offers unbeatable clamping flexibility; its compensating features provide the ability to securely clamp round, cubic and geometrically irregular workpieces when milling or turning. Conventional chucks operate with all jaws moving in the same direction either towards or away from the centre of the chuck whist the Inoflex® chuck operates with the jaws moving together or apart on two parallel axes. Compensation is provided to the diametrically connected base jaws by a sliding gate type gear mechanism.

Cumberland Platforms LTD (CPL) is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of vehicle-mounted access platforms for utilities, telecoms, and maintenance sectors. As part of the KLUBB Group, CPL delivers over 700 vehicle conversions per year from their Kettering site, ranging from pickup-mounted and van-mounted platforms to tracked and truck-mounted systems. CPL also provides nationwide servicing, maintenance, and spare parts, supporting both its own and third-party platforms, establishing a strong presence in the UK access-equipment market.

The Challenge
CPL was operating across multiple disconnected systems that could not scale with their rapid growth. Without unified data flowing through production, the team were faced with:

Bottlenecks between kitting and production: Because kitting and production teams lacked real-time visibility of each other’s progress, materials were not always ready when needed. This misalignment caused delays, confusion, and frequent stops on the shop floor.
Inability to plan production against resources: Without a unified view of workloads, capacity, and material availability, managers struggled to schedule builds accurately. Resource planning became reactive, making it harder to keep up with rising production volumes.
Production delays from bottlenecks: With limited visibility and inconsistent data, small issues escalated quickly. Delays in kitting, missing information, or miscommunication often resulted in stalled jobs and extended lead times.

They feature side bands made of galvanized steel (S series) or corrosion‑ and acid‑resistant stainless steel (SX series) and are available in multiple material qualities.
